Brief History

Brief History

In the year 1954, Delhi Bible Institute had its humble beginning in a rented shop in Jor Bagh Market with a clear focus to promote the reading, studying and teaching of the Holy Bible. The hand of the Lord was evident even in this small beginning and the work steadily progressed under His blessing. Through generous donations, Bible Bhavan was built. It was dedicated to the service of God and His Word on 1 January 1966. This fine building with its excellent facilities soon became a landmark in New Delhi. It continues to serve the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible teaching, and reaching ministries of Delhi Bible Institute. It has also provided a home for the local church Bible Bhavan Christian Fellowship. Its facilities are widely used by the Christian community in Delhi and India.

The focus of the work has been the local church. The work that was founded by the local church now known as Bible Bhavan Christian Fellowship. DBI continues to work in close co-operation with the church.

Through its service of reaching others with the Word of God and Bible teaching it has endeavoured to meet the needs which range from those with no knowledge of the Bible to that of the believer requiring a deeper knowledge of the Word.

The work of the Bible Institute began with Bible correspondence courses. Soon hundreds were writing to know more about the Bible. This service continues to under gird all the work that we do even today. We have answered hundreds and thousands of queries about Lord Jesus and the Bible through mail and telephone calls and in latter years through e-mails.

Bible portions were distributed extensively, public exposition of the scripture were regularly organised, radio programmes were added, films on the life and teaching of Lord Jesus were screened in schools and colleges. Many of these services, in much more effective and contemporary manner continue to be the focus of our service to our great nation.

Through our participation in New Delhi World Book Fair since 1986 we have sold 26,000 Bibles, 21,000 NT and Scripture portions, 3,600 Jesus videos, 1.8 million literature portions were distributed, and 16,000 enrolled for Bible correspondence courses.

To begin with, short-term residential Bible and language courses were provided to believers preparing for Christian service. Later, programmes of longer duration of one to three years were added. About 500 men were equipped during this initial phase of 1965 to 1984. These servants of God started or headed significant and pioneering works in India. 1985 saw the beginning of new thrust, short-term training programmes which ranged from Bible Exposition, Leadership, Counselling and church planting. Ten different residential programmes are being offered now in Hindi, English and Nepali languages. Till 2004, 4078 more were equipped through this ministry.

In 1954 the population of India was only 400 million. Today this has trebled. Our efforts have only touched the fringe of 1.2 billion people of India. Millions have yet to hear about the message of forgiveness, peace and reconciliation. This need continually challenges us. With God's grace we now embark upon Vision 2025 for our beloved nation. God willing by 2025 we plan for 12 new ashrams (centres) in the eleven state capitals of North- India and one for the Nepali world. We plan to train 60,000 young men and women in these centres. We plan to introduce new training and new tools for believers. This is a God sized vision and we depend on him and on your prayers and cooperation to see this come true in our lifetimes.
